Timeline

  1. 1513Chaul · MaharashtraAfter ending his failed Aden expedition, Albuquerque brought his fleet to Chaul and learned that Calicut's merchant fleet, attempting to sail toward Arabia during the Portuguese withdrawal from the blockade, had been scattered by storms and taken refuge in ports from Gujarat to Mangalore. He immediately deployed detached squadrons to begin a sea pursuit.
  2. 1513Malabar Coast · KeralaLopo Vaz de Sampaio with three ships blockaded Dabul and captured two large merchantmen; António Raposo blockaded Bhatkal with a caravel; Fernão Gomes de Lemos arrived at Mangalore in a foista and took two more ships. A merchantman at Dandah carrying three thousand quintals of pepper and ginger was captured. The Portuguese thus annihilated Calicut's entire ocean-going fleet for the year, dealing a devastating blow to Muslim merchants.
  3. 1513Calicut · KeralaThe naval blockade brought Calicut's trade to the brink of collapse and intensified court factionalism. Albuquerque backed Prince Nambiadiri to replace the original Zamorin, and on December 24 the two sides signed a twenty-one-article treaty: the Portuguese were permitted to build a fort at Calicut, purchase pepper and ginger at agreed prices, and collect half the port duties as tribute. Construction of the fortress began immediately, ending the Portuguese–Calicut War that had continued for over a decade since the 1502 massacre.
