Swiss Religious Peace (1550s)
In the 1550s the Swiss Confederacy maintained relative peace under the confessional coexistence established after the Second War of Kappel in 1531.
Timeline
- 1551–1560Kappel · Canton of ZurichThe principles of confessional coexistence established after the Second War of Kappel in 1531 remained in effect in the 1550s: Catholic cantons (such as Schwyz, Uri, and Unterwalden) and Evangelical cantons (such as Zurich, Bern, and Basel) each maintained their own faith, and at the confederal level wars between cantons on religious grounds were prohibited.
- 1553–1559Lucerne · SwitzerlandDuring the 1550s the Federal Diet repeatedly intervened in disputes among the cantons arising from religion, sheltering of heretics, or territorial claims, substituting arbitration for armed conflict. The cantons pursued reformation or maintained Catholicism internally, but at the confederal level 'non-interference' and collective security were upheld, avoiding a repeat of the wars of 1529–1531.
