Timeline
- 552–563Central Asian steppe and Sogdian region · Syr Darya basinAfter the Turkic Khaganate's founding, Istämi was ordered to command the western wing, advancing into the Central Asian steppe and Sogdia, gradually bringing Transoxiana's oasis city-states into Turkic territory, controlling key nodes of the western Silk Road and building strength for the later joint destruction of the Hephthalites.
- 563–567Amu Darya basin · Amu Darya basinAround 563, Istämi concluded an alliance with Sasanian Persia's Khosrow I (Khosrow I Anushirvan), attacking the Hephthalite Khaganate from north and south. In 567 the Hephthalites collapsed and the two powers divided their lands along the Amu Darya — the Turks took territory from the Syr Darya to north of the Amu Darya, Persia gained lands south of the Amu Darya. This utterly changed Central Asia's geopolitical landscape.
- 567–576Sogdia, Sogdiana · SogdiaAfter destroying the Hephthalites, Istämi sought a silk-trade route bypassing Persia, sending the Sogdian envoy Maniakh to Constantinople for talks with Byzantine emperor Justin II. The two concluded an alliance in 568, opening Turkic-Byzantine diplomatic cooperation; during Istämi's reign embassies were exchanged repeatedly, profoundly advancing Eurasian Silk Road diplomacy.
