Timeline

  1. 1671–1680French Mediterranean ports · Mediterranean coastFrench naval engineers began experimenting with mounting large-caliber mortars on ship hulls to hurl explosive bombs at coastal fortresses and cities. Early trials faced the problem of recoil damaging the hull; engineers explored specially reinforced structures and mortar mountings, accumulating key technical parameters that laid the foundation for dedicated bomb vessel design.
  2. 1681–1682Toulon naval arsenal · ProvenceNaval engineer Bernard Renau d'Eliçagaray directed the design of France's first dedicated bomb vessels, using reinforced keels and special shock-absorbing carriages to absorb mortar recoil, producing twin-mortar bomb ketches capable of hurling explosive shells at land targets from a safe distance offshore.
  3. 1682Algiers · AlgeriaFrench Vice Admiral Duquesne led a fleet equipped with bomb vessels in bombarding Algiers, the North African corsair stronghold, dropping thousands of explosive shells on the city and harbor facilities, causing severe damage and forcing Algiers to release some French captives. This was the first combat use of bomb vessels in history, proving their strategic value against coastal fortification targets.
  4. 1683–1700British and Dutch navies · Northwestern EuropeThe strategic effect of the Algiers bombardment shocked the European powers; Britain and the Netherlands successively studied and built their own bomb vessels. The Royal Navy began commissioning bomb ships in the late 1680s and repeatedly used them to bombard French coastal cities during the Nine Years' War of the 1690s; the bomb vessel quickly became a standard operational unit of major navies.
