  1. 1051–1056Rome · RomeIn the early 1050s Peter Damian fiercely attacked simony and clerical marriage in works such as the Book of Gomorrah, won the support of Pope Leo IX, participated in synod decisions, and pushed for the reform of monastic discipline, becoming an intellectual and moral authority of the reform papacy.
  2. 1057–1060Ostia · LazioIn 1057 Pope Stephen IX appointed Peter Damian Cardinal Bishop of Ostia, placing him at the top ranks of the papacy. He thereafter traveled to Germany several times as papal legate to mediate the dispute over the Bishop of Milan, and continued writing theological works to consolidate the reform line.
