Timeline

  1. 1441–1442Thang Long (Hanoi) · HanoiLe Nhan Tong, personal name Le Bang Co, was the son of Le Thai Tong, the third emperor of the Later Le dynasty. Born in the Later Le palace in 1441, the following year (1442) Thai Tong died, and the one-year-old Bang Co succeeded to the throne under the auspices of his mother, Empress Dowager Tuyen Tu, Nguyen Thi Anh—the youngest accession in Later Le history.
  2. 1451–1459Imperial City, Thang Long (Hanoi) · HanoiLe Nhan Tong ascended as a child, with real power exercised by Empress Dowager Tuyen Tu and senior court ministers. In the 1450s, though Nhan Tong was growing up, state affairs remained constrained. The court continued and strengthened the Le dynasty's Confucian system of governance, regularly holding imperial examinations, recruiting scholar-officials, and maintaining tributary relations with Ming China. The Later Le dynasty was relatively stable domestically, with no large-scale border warfare, and society and the economy continued to develop on the basis of Thai Tong's reforms.
  3. 1459Imperial City, Thang Long (Hanoi) · HanoiIn 1459, Nhan Tong's half-brother Le Nghi Dan launched a palace coup, leading troops into the imperial palace, assassinating Le Nhan Tong and Empress Dowager Tuyen Tu, and immediately declaring himself emperor (known to history as the 'Later Deposed Emperor'). However, Le Nghi Dan's usurpation provoked strong backlash at court, and within months he was overthrown by a coalition of princes and powerful ministers; Le Thanh Tong ascended, and the Later Le dynasty's legitimate line continued. Le Nhan Tong was assassinated at only eighteen, and later generations posthumously titled him 'Nhan Tong,' expressing remembrance of his benevolent nature.
