  1. c. 1527–1529Cuzco and Quito · Inca EmpireAfter Huayna Capac and his designated heir Ninan Cuyuchi died in the north, Huáscar declared himself Sapa Inca at Cuzco while Atahualpa remained in Quito with the veterans of the northern campaigns. Their exchanges of envoys and hostages failed, and the succession crisis turned into open hostility.
  2. c. 1529–1532Chimborazo · AndesHuáscar attacked the north first, briefly putting Atahualpa at a disadvantage. Atahualpa, relying on northern campaign generals Quizquiz, Chalcochima, and Rumiñahui, counterattacked, routing the Cuzco army around Chimborazo, recovering Cajamarca, Tumipampa, and other northern strongholds, and turning to a southward offensive.
  3. c. 1532Qipaipan · CuzcoThe northern army marched south along the Andes, winning successive victories at Bombon, Jauja, and elsewhere. Huáscar was defeated and captured in the decisive battle at Qipaipan west of Cuzco; Quizquiz entered Cuzco and purged Huáscar's partisans. Atahualpa himself remained in the north, ending the military phase of the civil war.
