Timeline
- c. 1439–1460Diyarbakir (Amid) · Southeastern AnatoliaYaqub Beg was born around 1439, son of Uzun Hasan and one of his wives (believed to include the Trapezuntine princess Theodora Komnene). In this batch's period (1451–1460) he was in his early teens, growing up as a prince amid the Aq Qoyunlu's rapid expansion. His father Uzun Hasan succeeded around 1453 with Diyarbakir as his capital, and Yaqub Beg thus personally witnessed the dynasty's key transition from tribal confederation to regional power, receiving a military and political education in the Turkmen noble tradition.
- 1461–1478Tabriz · East Azerbaijan ProvinceIn the 1460s, as the Aq Qoyunlu moved their capital to Tabriz and conquered the Kara Qoyunlu (1467), Yaqub Beg took part in military and political affairs as crown prince. He accompanied his father on campaigns, gained experience in commanding armies, and began to engage with the administrative culture of the Persian–Turkmen court. In the Battle of Otlukbili in 1473 (between the Ottoman Empire and the Aq Qoyunlu) he may already have taken part in military operations; although the battle was ultimately lost, the Aq Qoyunlu's imperial territory was roughly maintained until his father's death.
- 1478–1490Tabriz · East Azerbaijan ProvinceAfter Uzun Hasan's death from illness in 1478, Yaqub Beg ascended the sultanate after eliminating rival brothers. His reign (1478–1490) is regarded by later historians as the last flourishing phase of the Aq Qoyunlu: he actively patronized philosophy and science, especially astronomy, supporting Ali Qushji's scholarly work in Tabriz, and worked to maintain diplomatic relations with the Ottoman Empire and Venice. However, his sudden death (1490) triggered succession confusion, directly weakening the Aq Qoyunlu's cohesion and creating conditions for the rise of the Safavid dynasty.
