Timeline

  1. -200–600Hexi Corridor to the northern rim of the Taklamakan · ChinaAfter Zhang Qian's missions to the Western Regions, Central Plains and Central Asian caravans crossed the deserts with Bactrian camels; saddle tack had to accommodate the spacing between the two humps and long-distance loads, and leather, felt pads, and wooden frame structures gradually took shape, becoming standard equipment for caravans and military post.
  2. 1081–1090Trade route from Kashgar to Samarkand · Central AsiaIn the late eleventh century, the polities of Central Asia still relied on Bactrian camel caravans; saddle tack was divided into riding saddles and pack saddles: the riding saddle was set between the two humps, while the pack saddle was fitted with balanced panniers. Indirect trade between the Northern Song, the Karakhanids, and the Seljuks passed along these routes, and saddle-making craft spread through interethnic markets.
  3. 1200–1800Camel caravan routes from the Mongolian Plateau to Beijing · ChinaThe Mongol Empire's military post and caravans made large-scale use of Bactrian camels, with standardized saddle tack for quick replacement; the Ming and Qing established camel administration officials to manage official and private camel caravans, and Bactrian camel saddle tack continued to be produced and repaired at distribution centers such as Zhangjiakou and Guihuacheng until modern transport replaced it.
