Timeline

  1. 1514–1515Alcalá · Alcalá de HenaresAfter the scholarly team organized by Cisneros at Alcalá completed the New Testament collation, Arnald Guillén de Brocar printed the Greek and Latin parallel text. This was one of the earliest printed editions of the Greek New Testament, but by plan it could only be sold once the whole work was complete and papal permission obtained.
  2. 1517Alcalá · Alcalá de HenaresIn 1517 the four-language Old Testament and the complete six-volume work were finished, with Hebrew, Aramaic Targum, the Latin Vulgate, and the Greek Septuagint set in parallel columns. About six hundred copies were printed; the philological project was complete at the printing stage, but the copies remained sealed pending papal approval.
  3. 1517–1520Alcalá / Papal Curia · SpainPrinting did not mean immediate circulation. The project required approval from Pope Leo X before public release, and Cisneros did not live to see it sold. Permission was granted around 1520 and the copies entered circulation around 1522, so what was completed in 1514–1517 was printing and collation, not market distribution.
