  1. 1610–1615Donglin Academy · JiangsuDonglin scholars continued the tradition of lecturing established by Gu Xiancheng, championing the motto "the sound of wind, rain, and reading, each sound reaching the ear," commenting on current affairs and advocating moral rectitude to reform governance, standing in sharp opposition to bureaucratic groups such as the Qi, Chu, and Zhe factions, which were branded as "heterodox parties."
  2. 1615–1619Beijing · BeijingCapital evaluations, appointments of Liaodong commanders, and the lingering succession disputes intertwined; each faction attacked the others through memorials, and Donglin and the Qi-Chu-Zhe factions became irreconcilable in court. Official appointments often depended on factional affiliation rather than merit, further reducing governmental efficiency.
  3. 1620Beijing · BeijingDuring the brief reign of the Taichang Emperor, Donglin figures were recalled to office, and this trend continued into the early Tianqi reign. However, the Palace Transfer Case and the Red Pill Case reignited the factional struggle; inner-court eunuchs allied with the Qi-Chu-Zhe factions, and although Donglin temporarily gained the upper hand, a backlash loomed, planting the seeds for Wei Zhongxian's later dominance.
