The fortress garrison was limited in numbers but held out on the terrain awaiting relief, while sending urgent appeals for aid to the French authorities in the north.
  2. c. 1637Languedoc · LanguedocFrance quickly organized a relief army under the joint command of Marshal de Schomberg and the Prince of Condé (the elder, Henri II de Bourbon), assembling some ten thousand troops from the direction of Languedoc with the aim of breaking the Spanish siege of Leucate.
  3. 1637Outskirts of Leucate · RoussillonOn 28 September, the French relief force and the Spanish besieging army fought a field battle outside Leucate. Exploiting the terrain and coordinated action, the French decisively defeated the Spanish, killing and capturing large numbers of the enemy, while the remnants fled back in disorder to Roussillon. The siege was lifted, the fortress of Leucate was secure, and the Spanish southern offensive failed completely.
