Battle of the Fehmarn Strait
From 31 May to 1 June 1677, the Dano-Norwegian navy intercepted and destroyed a Swedish squadron near Fehmarn island, also called the Battle of Møn.
Timeline
- 1677Gothenburg to the Great Belt · Baltic SeaAfter the Battle of Öland (1676), the Dano-Norwegian fleet controlled the southern Baltic and blockaded Swedish vessels trapped at Gothenburg. In May 1677 a Swedish squadron under Erik Skabra attempted to enter the Baltic through the Great Belt to join the main fleet, and was pursued by Niels Juel's Danish fleet.
- 1677Between Fehmarn island and Warnemünde · Fehmarn StraitThe two fleets made contact in the waters north of Fehmarn island, and a fierce artillery duel raged from the evening of the 31st to the early hours of 1 June. The Danish flagship Christian V and the Swedish flagship Amarant exchanged fire, and several Swedish merchant ships converted to warships were captured one by one or ran aground and were burned during the pursuit.
- 1677Southern Baltic Sea · Baltic SeaSweden lost about 8 ships and over 1,500 officers and men killed, wounded, or captured, and Skabra himself was taken prisoner. Denmark suffered almost no losses and thereby further established naval superiority in the Baltic, laying the foundation for the great victory at the Battle of Køge Bay that July and for preventing Swedish seaborne reinforcements to Pomerania.
