Timeline

  1. 1052–1053Rome · LazioThe Normans expanded in Apulia and Calabria, encroaching on Lombard and Byzantine interests. Pope Leo IX, born in Lorraine, called on Swabian knights and Italian lords to form a coalition marching south, hoping to check Norman power by force.
  2. 1053Apulia · ApuliaLeo IX personally led the coalition into Apulia, facing the Norman leaders Aimar, Robert Guiscard, and Richard of Aversa. Lombard morale was unsteady, while the Norman cavalry concentrated its forces seeking a decisive battle.
  3. 1053Civitate · ApuliaThe Norman cavalry routed the coalition. The Swabian infantry fought hard before breaking, and the Lombard line collapsed first. The papal side was badly defeated, Leo IX himself fell into Norman hands, and the military balance in southern Italy shifted to the Normans.
  4. 1053–1054Benevento · CampaniaThe Normans settled Leo IX at Benevento, treating him with relative courtesy, and released him in 1054. This capture forced the papacy to admit it could not drive out the Normans by force, turning instead to investiture and alliance, ultimately leading to the 1059 Treaty of Melfi.
