Timeline

  1. 1451–1455Mali imperial court · MaliIn the 1450s the Mali Empire suffered weak rule under monarchs such as Mansa Muhammad and succession disputes; court factional strife eroded central decision-making. Local military leaders and royal branches contested the throne, leaving the empire unable to mobilize its army to defend the frontiers.
  2. 1453–1460Gao and Timbuktu · MaliMali's control over Gao on the middle Niger and the scholarly center of Timbuktu existed in name only; local Songhai powers reduced tribute and expanded autonomy. Tax from trans-Saharan trade routes no longer flowed steadily to the Mali court, and the empire's eastern lands effectively became independent or semi-independent polities.
  3. 1455–1460West African Sahel · SahelMali's dominance of West African trade networks was eroded by Bornu, Hausa city-states, and emerging coastal powers. Frontier wars were frequent but yielded limited gains; gold-producing areas and trade-route nodes successively slipped from effective control, shrinking the empire to its Manding core and laying the groundwork for Songhai's full replacement after the 1460s.
