Pala Dynasty Decline in Bengal in the 1060s
In the 1060s the Pala dynasty's hegemony over Bengal and Bihar continued to decline as Vigrahapala III faced the rising Sena dynasty and local powers.
Timeline
- 1060–1065Eastern Bengal · BengalIn the early 1060s the Sena dynasty (Vijayapala, Vallala Sena, and others) expanded in eastern Bengal; Pala control over Vanga and Samatata weakened, and the political support of the Buddhist monastery network shrank accordingly.
- 1066–1070Magadha · BiharIn the late 1060s Pala central authority over local military leaders and monastery estates declined; though the Bihar core still held, tribute and military mobilization capacity fell far short of Mahipala I's era, and by around 1070 the dynasty's decline was hard to reverse.
