  1. 1565–1571Parma · Emilia-RomagnaMarried Maria of Portugal in Brussels in 1565, then entered Spanish service, gaining military experience in Italy and the Mediterranean. His father Ottavio was still alive, so Alessandro had not yet succeeded; he became Duke of Parma only after his father's death in 1586.
  2. 1571–1592Netherlands · NetherlandsAccompanied Don Juan to the Netherlands in 1577, fought at the Battle of Gembloux in January 1578, and that November became Governor of the Spanish Netherlands. He took Maastricht (1579) and Antwerp (1585) by siege, reshaping the war; recalled to the French theater in 1592, he died at Arras that December.
