Uli II
Uli II (Mandingo name Gbèré, meaning 'red' complexion) was a 15th-century Mansa of the Mali Empire, traditionally reigning c. 1460–1480/81.
Timeline
- c. 1460–1481Niani / Dioma · Mali EmpireOral tradition preserved in Dioma holds that two brothers from Niani liberated Dioma and repelled Fulani incursions; the elder first took the title Mansa, and Gbèré succeeded as Uli II after the death of Musa III. Another account says Musa was his father rather than his brother. By the 15th century Mali had lost most of its northern provinces: Timbuktu and Walata fell to the Tuaregs around 1433, and from the 1460s Songhai seized places such as Mema. This entry originally misidentified him as the second-generation Mansa after Sunjata (that was Uli I, c. 1255–1270).
