Timeline

  1. 1161–1170Krak des Chevaliers · County of TripoliBy the 1160s Krak des Chevaliers had completed systematic reinforcement of its outer stone walls, towers, and inner keep; the Hospitallers garrisoned hundreds of knights and auxiliary troops and controlled more than a dozen subordinate castles in the surrounding area (such as Crac de Montreal). Against the backdrop of Nur al-Din's expansion in Syria and rising pressure on the Crusaders' eastern frontier, this fortress became the most core defensive node and supply hub on the eastern line of the County of Tripoli.
  2. 1170Crac de Montreal (Montreal Castle) · TransjordanIn 1170 Saladin captured the southern subordinate fortress Crac de Montreal, and the Crusaders' eastern frontier contracted further; though Krak des Chevaliers still stood, the loss of its southern screen concentrated defensive pressure inland, and the Hospitallers strengthened the fortress's own grain stores, water storage, and ballista deployments, preparing for decades of resisting Muslim sieges.
