  1. 1252–1256Toledo · Castilla-La ManchaAfter Ferdinand III's death in 1252, Muhammad I continued the Treaty of Jaén of 1246, paying annual tribute at the Castilian court. In 1254 he attended the cortes convened by Alfonso X at Toledo, paid homage to the newborn princess Berengaria, and confirmed the tribute, in exchange for nearly twenty years of relative peace to consolidate the Granada–Málaga–Almería triangle.
  2. 1256–1260Granada · AndalusiaDuring the 1250s, Muhammad I used the peace window with Castile to continuously build palaces, waterworks, and fortifications at the old Alhambra site on the Sabika hill, and appointed his brother Ismail and nephew Abu Muhammad ibn Ashqilula to govern key places. He strengthened the silk and dried-fruit trade and settled Muslims fleeing from Seville and elsewhere, making the emirate the economic and cultural center of the last independent Islamic polity in Iberia.
