Timeline

  1. c. -600Gaul (Bituriges) · GaulAccording to Livy, Ab Urbe Condita 5.34, Ambicatus, because of overpopulation, ordered his sister's sons Bellovesus and Segovesus to seek new homes. By lot Segovesus received the Hercynian Forest and Bellovesus Italy. Livy lists the accompanying peoples as Bituriges, Arvernes, Senones, and others, which scholars largely regard as a retrojection of tribal names from Livy's own time.
  2. c. -600–-579Alpine passes · Alpine passesLivy says the host was able to cross the Alps into northern Italy after aiding the Greeks of Massalia. Archaeological and historical research places the large-scale Celtic entry into the Po Valley around the late 5th to 4th century BCE (including the context of the Battle of the Allia around 387), about two centuries later than the legendary chronology.
  3. -600Mediolanum · MilanLivy's tradition holds that Bellovesus settled in the Insubrian region and founded the town later called Mediolanum (present-day Milan); subsequently the Senones and other peoples came through the same pass. This should be read as an origin narrative of the Celtic entry into northern Italy rather than a datable record of a city's founding.
