  1. 900–1100Deccan–Persian Gulf trade route · Deccan PlateauWootz steel ingots produced in the Deccan region of South Asia were shipped by sea to the Persian Gulf and then transferred to Syria and Damascus; local craftsmen used repeated folding and forging with acid etching to reveal carbide patterns, forming the distinctive wavy texture.
  2. 1261–1270Damascus · SyriaAfter the Mamluk sultanate took control of Syria in the 1260s, Damascus sword workshops supplied curved sabers and straight swords to the sultan's guard and nobility; European Crusaders and merchants called such weapons 'Damascus steel,' and their patterns and sharpness became legendary.
  3. 1500–1700Istanbul and Damascus · IstanbulDuring the Ottoman Empire, Damascus steel swords were still prized by the court and military, but the exhaustion of Indian wootz steel ore sources and changes in trade routes made traditional pattern-welded steel supply increasingly difficult; by around the eighteenth century, authentic craftsmanship was nearly lost.
