Timeline
- 1451–1454Middle Rhine region · Rhine regionAs demand for paper surged at the Mainz printing shops, millers along the Rhine converted water-powered mills into paper mills, using river water to wash and beat rag pulp. Capacity expanded significantly, providing a stable raw material supply for mass printing.
- 1454–1457Western European papermaking centers · Western EuropeMovable-type printing demanded greater flatness, ink absorption and uniform thickness of paper, prompting mills to improve bamboo-screen moulds, sizing formulas and pressing processes, producing high-quality writing paper better suited to printing. Parchment, being costly, accelerated its exit from the mainstream writing market.
- 1458–1460Netherlands and Central Europe · Central EuropeAs printing shops were established across Europe, papermaking techniques spread to the Netherlands, Bohemia and elsewhere. Local raw material supply chains gradually formed and paper prices continued to fall, providing ever more ample material conditions for Europe's knowledge revolution.
