Timeline
- 1246–1250Delhi · DelhiAfter the nobles deposed Ala ud-Din Masud in 1246, Mahmud, aged only seventeen or eighteen, was raised to the sultanate. The historian Minhaj-i-Siraj's work Nasir-i-Sijill was dedicated to him, showing his legitimacy through Iltutmish royal blood.
- 1250–1266Delhi · DelhiMahmud himself devoted himself to religious life, while state affairs were mainly handled by his father-in-law Balban as regent. Around 1253, Mongol raids struck the Multan and Lahore region; the sultan and Balban led troops north, with Balban stationed at Jhelum to deter the enemy, preventing a deeper Mongol advance. This period was nominally Mahmud's reign, but real power lay with Balban.
- 1261–1266Delhi · DelhiFrom 1261 to 1270 Mahmud remained the nominal monarch until his death in 1266. Because he had no male heir, Balban declared himself sultan after his death, and the Slave dynasty entered the era of Balban.
