  1. 1417Touques · CalvadosHenry V landed near Touques in Normandy with some 10,000–15,000 troops and quickly seized coastal towns of Lower Normandy. The ongoing French civil war and Burgundian-Armagnac fighting left the French crown unable to organize an effective defense.
  2. 1417Caen · CalvadosThe English besieged Caen, the capital of Normandy, bombarding its walls with artillery. The garrison surrendered after about two weeks. Caen's fall symbolized the Norman political center falling into English hands and greatly shocked the French court.
  3. 1417Lower Normandy · NormandyThrough the autumn the English continued taking towns such as Avranches and Bayeux, establishing a network of garrisoned castles and securing supply lines. Scattered French counterattacks failed to reverse the situation, and by year's end most of Normandy lay under English control.
