Timeline
- 1370–1371Kraków · PolandCasimir III died in November 1370 without a male heir; in accordance with a prior agreement the Polish nobles raised his nephew, Louis I of Hungary, to the Polish throne. Piast rule formally ended, Poland entered a personal union with Hungary, and the nobility used the conditions of the coronation to expand their privileges.
- 1372–1377Greater Poland · PolandLouis I based his rule of Poland in Kraków, traveling frequently between Buda and Kraków. Through documents such as the Privilege of Koszyce (1374) he made concessions to the nobility in exchange for support in consolidating the realm; he also managed relations with the Duchy of Masovia and attended to security on the northeastern frontier bordering the Teutonic Knights and Lithuania.
- 1378–1380Kraków–Buda · Central EuropeIn the late 1370s Louis I began arranging the succession after his death: he designated his daughter Jadwiga as one of the heirs to the Polish throne and continued coordinating with the Hungarian nobility over the transmission of the Polish crown. Poland remained unified under the personal union in the 1370s, but royal dependence on the nobility deepened, paving the way for Jadwiga's accession in 1384 and the later Jagiellonian marriage.
