Timeline
- 1655–1663Kyoto Imperial Palace · KyotoHe ascended the throne on January 5, 1655 as the 111th emperor, reigning until March 5, 1663. During this period Tokugawa Ietsune served as shogun. In 1663 he abdicated in favor of his younger brother Prince Yoshihito (Emperor Reigen); Yoshihito was Go-Sai's own personal name, not that of his successor.
- 1663–1685Kyoto · KyotoAfter abdication he resided in Kyoto as a retired emperor. Japanese Wikipedia notes that his accession was intended as a transition while Yoshihito grew up, and that the court was in practice largely run by the cloistered rule of the retired Emperor Go-Mizunoo. He died on March 26, 1685. He should not be portrayed as independently conducting cloistered rule, nor as overlapping with Iemitsu.
