Timeline

  1. 1121–1125Stuttgart · SwabiaFrederick II succeeded his father as Duke of Swabia in 1105 and by Henry V's late years had grown into one of the empire's most powerful princes. In the early 1120s he and his brother Conrad III divided Swabia and Franconia between them, giving the Hohenstaufen a firm base between the Rhine and Danube and laying groundwork for the imperial contest.
  2. 1125–1126Mainz · Rhineland-PalatinateAfter Henry V died in August 1125 the princes held an election at Mainz. As the Hohenstaufen candidate Frederick II won support from some South German princes but ultimately lost to Duke Lothair III of Saxony. Afterwards the Hohenstaufen refused full submission and began organizing resistance to Lothair's royal authority.
  3. 1127–1130Nuremberg · FranconiaAfter 1127 Frederick II and his brother Conrad III continued resisting Lothair III in Franconia and Swabia. Following the assassination of Charles of Flanders in 1127 imperial power was reorganized, and the Hohenstaufen used the opportunity to consolidate their southern base. By around 1130 the standoff was set, foreshadowing Conrad III's eventual accession.
